The more you're around the Garagedogs whether it be while they are on stage playing or in a bar drinking, there is no question that they grow on you. Relocating from Mobile Alabama a few years back, and taking their Southern Rock influences with them, the Garagedogs might just be a modern day Southern rock version of The Velvet Underground. Hold on now, those be some pretty big acclamations. Face it, there will only be one Lou Reed and one Velvet Underground. At times, the Garagedogs borrow heavily from VU, but never forget their Southern roots. “The Evils” is a damn near masterpiece. One song goes into the other and the entertainment never stops. And that’s what it is entertainment, because you are never going to hear anyone say that these boys are great musicians, and that’s a tag they don’t need to have attached to them. The material on “The Evils” is consistent and loads of fun from the upbeat poppy “Whitney” to English rock sounding “No”. The bluesy “Money” which features some fine harmonica and steady drumming might be the clear favorite, but only until you get to the next track because if this offering is anything, it’s consistent. There is even a touch of hardcore punk in “Girl”, while the comical “Drugs”, and its sing-a-long “you’ve been smoking too much (insert pot/beer/crack/ and so on) oh my Christ” chorus is pretty damn funny. If that’s not enough they even do a cover of Lucinda Williams “Joy”. I’d have to say, I like this record more and more with each listen, kind of like the way I like these guys more and more every time I see them.
